Delta State Government Embarks on Public Enlightenment Campaign Against Open-Grazing
The State Public Enlightenment Office has begun a sensitization and awareness campaign on the Delta State Livestock Management and Breeding Law, popularly called the anti-open-grazing law which prohibits the movement of livestock from one location to another without following the procedures laid down in the act to forestall the violence and criminality that has plagued cattle rearing in Southern Nigeria.
The Executive Assistant to the Governor on Public Enlightenment: Policy and Programmes, Mr Olisa Ifeajika on Wednesday at the Ika Federal Constituency stakeholders engagement in Agbor, stated that the law was not intended to punish anybody but rather, it aims to regulate the livestock industry as it is done in other sectors of the economy where people who do one form of business or the other do not encroach on the rights of others especially landowners.
He stated that the Oborevwori administration is committed to ensuring value in the livestock industry, considering the huge economic potential in the business if best practices are adopted that will benefit both the herders, framers and people in the community; because more jobs will be created in a properly ranch.
Speaking at the event, Hon. Anthony Emeka Elekeokwuri who provided further details of the law explained that the government of Delta State under the leadership of Rt Hon Sheriff Oborevwori is very much interested in enforcing the law, but as an administration that is committed to the welfare of all citizens and those who do business in Delta, the governor wants everyone involved in the value chain to be well informed about the provisions of the law; through multi-stakeholder engagement and conversations such as this awareness and sensitization program.
Other stakeholders; including representatives of the Police, Community Presidents General, Vigilante, Market women association and others thanked the organizers of the sensitization program and commended the governor of Delta state for his commitment towards addressing this problem that has led to the loss of several lives and destruction of farmland.
