INEC Sets Stage for 2027: Voter Revalidation and Election Timelines Unveiled 🔥

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) is gearing up for the 2027 General Election with a series of consultative meetings with key stakeholders, starting with Civil Society Organisations (CSOs). INEC Chairman, Prof. Amupitan, emphasized the importance of collaboration to ensure credible elections and safeguard Nigeria's democracy.

Recent achievements include the successful Anambra State governorship election, conducted with transparency and accountability. Upcoming elections include the FCT Area Council Elections on February 21, 2026, and bye-elections in Rivers and Kano States. INEC has accredited 83 domestic and 5 foreign observers for the FCT elections.

A nationwide Voter Revalidation Exercise will be conducted to sanitize the voters' register, addressing issues like duplicate registrations and under-age registration. The Continuous Voter Registration exercise has registered over 2.68 million eligible voters, with a second phase running until April 2026.

INEC has received 171 letters of intent from associations seeking registration as political parties. The Commission urges CSOs to support voter education, peaceful campaigns, and the fight against electoral violence.

CSOs pledged their support, raising concerns over delays in amending the Electoral Act, which could affect preparations for the 2027 General Election. They called for urgent legislative action to ensure seamless elections.

Key events:

- FCT Area Council Elections: February 21, 2026

- Ekiti State governorship election: June 20, 2026

- Osun State governorship election: August 8, 2026

- 2027 General Election: Timetable to be released soon

INEC aims to deliver credible elections, relying on stakeholder support and a sanitized voters' register.
