A man identified as John Paul, said to be from Emu-Ebendo in Ndokwa West Local Government Area, has been arrested and reportedly moved to custody in Asaba.

The reason for the arrest has not been officially confirmed. However, several sources say it may be linked to comments he made in a viral video directed at members of the “City Boys” political group.

In the video circulating online, John Paul is heard saying he had purchased 500 bottles of water and would use them to stone anyone who wears a City Boys cap to campaign in his community. He added that security personnel escorting such campaigners would not be spared. He also questioned the rationale for campaigning with City Boys caps in Ukwuani nation when the area lacks basic amenities like electricity.

Authorities have not publicly stated the specific offence. Legal experts say the comments could be interpreted as capable of inciting public disorder against the group and security personnel.

Meanwhile, claims have surfaced suggesting the Deputy Governor ordered the arrest. Sources close to the Deputy Governor’s camp have denied the allegation. They believe some individuals are dragging the Deputy Governor’s name into the case to pressure for the suspect’s release.

Police authorities in Delta State have yet to issue an official statement on the arrest or charges.

Questions:

Do you see John Paul’s comments as free speech or incitement to violence? If your community lacked basic amenities like electricity, would you understand this kind of outburst or if you were in his shoes, would you have said the same thing? Should the focus be on arresting people like John Paul, or on the leaders who haven’t provided basic amenities for their people?
